On-Set Spy Leaks ‘GhostBusters 3′ Video and Pictures

[UPDATED February 24, 2009]

Over the last month there has been a lot of attention revolving around the 1984 sci-fi comedy Ghostbusters due to the release of the franchise’s first Next-Gen video game trailer and news that all 4 of the film’s original cast member, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson (but no Rick Moranis :( ) reunited for the first time in over 20 years to lend their voice and likeness for the ’09 adventure. Questions and stories of a possible 2nd sequel began working their way around the blog-o-sphere with no avail. Until now…

First, let me recoup you all on what has happened since the spirit fighting franchise was put to an abrupt halt after Ghostbusters II. A while back the Godfather of Ghostbusters, Dan Aykroyd, revealed that he has already penned a script for a third GB movie with original writer Harold Ramis called “Ghostbusters III: Hellbent “. Apparently, the film was put on a hold when Bill Murray refused to reprise his pivotal role as Dr. Peter Venkman in Aykroyd’s new film. Rumor was that when Murray became a holdout co-writer Ramis decided to re-write the script with a new plot that followed the remain 3 Ghostbusters (Dr. Raymond Stantz, Dr. Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddmore) searching for a replacement for Murry’s character.

Somehow over the last decade Aykroyd’s “Ghostbusters III: Hellbent “ movie never made it past pitching stage. Best guesses were that Dan’s Murray-less sequel couldn’t find any sponsorship, making the prospect of a Ghostbust sequel seem improbable.

That is until in early September of last year when Colombia pictures signed “The Office” writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to script a third film that will allegedly follow not only many if not all of the old Ghostbusters but also a few new ones. Suddenly a ‘Ghostbusters 3′ page popped up on IMDB with “2010″ as an expected release date and the hype was back for a possible part 3.

The news of the new film mixed with the promotion of Ghostbusters: The Video Game produced a bombardment of “Who, What and When” questions to the franchise’s original cast members. Akroyd gave his thoughts on the refreshed GhostBusters film toEOnline, calling Gene and Lee “two sharp young writers” and saying it would be an an “absolute dream” if producers hired Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow to be part of the new generation of paranormal activity preventors (an invitation that Seth didn’t care for).

Bill Murray expressed enthusiasm for another round at eradicating supernatural occurrences. He told Ain’tItCoolNews that recording the voice of Peter Venkman for the video game drudged up some old feelings about the 80′s classic. So much that he “found himself walking down the street singing the Ghostbusters theme song” then revealed that “the first 40 minutes of the original film is some of the best stuff he’s been associated with.”

Even Sigourney Weaver, who had a recurring role as Dana Barrett in both flicks, chimed in. Telling MTV, “I’m supposed to get in touch with Bill [Murray] next week” to discuss Lee and Gene’s new film. Adding her own idea for the new script, “I would hope that my little Oscar would be one of the [new] Ghostbusters even if I’m not in it,” referring to her demon possessed baby from ‘Ghostbusters II’.

And still no no Rick Moranis :(

Anyway, since early December the hype revolving around Colombia Pictures’ new Ghostbusters film has died, it’s IMDB hasn’t been updated, and no new information has been announced, released or leaked. Until now…

Yesterday, Movie-Gossip site IESB received an anonymous e-mail with the subject line “spy footage from GB3″ from someone named “ectospy” (“Ectoplasm” being a term used to explain spiritual energy connected with the formation of ghosts, and “spy” being… well, “spy”). The message contained a URL to a WordPress site called “GHOSTSPY” which contains the following message:

“Yes, they are shooting it already. And yes, I am part of the crew. And no, I won’t tell any details. Because if I do and they find out, they will kill me. That’s why my little friend here will do the talking. Stay tuned for more …”

“it” being ‘Ghostbusters 3′, and the “little friend” being a hidden camera which ectospy was kind enough to take a picture of and post it on his site along with a couple of Youtube clips (below) and a few pictures from the set.

One of the clips shows a yellow cab being crushed and the other, which he labeled “CREATURE”, shows what looks like some kind of giant monster composed of miscellaneous garbage. The GB spy also has photos of what he claims are the new Proton guns, Proton Back backs, someone wearing a Ghostbusters uniform.

We’ve added a few of the leaked images and the two clips below. Apparently “ectospy” will be updating is blog daily with new photos and videos from the alleged Ghostbusters III set so head over to ghostspy.wordpress.com for more. Get them while you can because this spy isn’t covering his online tracks very well, so he may just become “the once employed ectospy” very soon…
